Moreton's Photographic Skin : An ecology of sensate correspondence

Transmaterialreality through Clay~Withdrawn Ceramic

A reading apparatus whose particular strength is that it allows three forms of encounter to remain distinct but mutually active:

The sensate encounter: what the viewer experiences through atmosphere, surface, proximity and allure.

The material encounter: how bodies and materials affect and transform one another through making.

The conceptual encounter: how writing and theoretical correspondents open the work to further thought without claiming to settle its meaning.

Photographic skin establishes a distinctive point of entry through surface, trace, allure and vicarious touching.

Transmaterialreality names the transformation of relations through making, rather than the translation of images into objects.

Clay~ceramic brings material resistance, transformation and persistence into the exhibition's centre.

Spatial practice remains the larger field: the exhibition is not simply about photography and ceramics, but about what their correspondence allows other bodies, spaces and atmospheres to do.

Moreton's spatial practice explores how photographic surfaces, bodies of thought, materials and atmospheres enter into correspondence, generating spatial propositions that remain open to further encounter.

The photographic skin becomes a sensate threshold through which bodies persist beyond their immediate presence. Its allure draws attention towards what remains withdrawn, allowing images, traces and atmospheric intensities to migrate into the material encounters of clay. Through making, these relations are not translated intact but troubled and transformed. Clay introduces its own resistances, plasticities and temporalities, allowing other spatial bodies to emerge.

Firing establishes a further material condition. The withdrawn ceramic persists as a body bearing traces of encounters that it cannot fully disclose. Its surfaces, apertures and cavities open relations with light, architecture, atmosphere and other bodies, allowing the propositions of making to continue beyond their formation.

Photography and ceramic become distinct but corresponding bodies within an ecology of spatial practice. Their relation is not one of image and representation, but of transmaterialreality: the ongoing reconstitution of relations through material encounter. The photographic surface solicits further touching; clay encounters and transforms its force~feelings; the ceramic persists without closing the proposition.

The exhibition offers a situated encounter with these movements of allure, material resistance, withdrawal and futurity. It invites attention to how bodies become spatially consequential through their relations with other bodies, and how making can bring those relations into perceptible, sensate and persistent form.

The ceramics persist. The photographic skin wayfares through clay. Their correspondence allows Moreton's spatial practice to surface without being brought to a conclusion.

The photographic skin is not simply an image that clay subsequently translates. It is a sensate, indexical body whose allure sets other activities of inquiry in motion. Through proximity, memory, reading and making, its force~feelings enter the material conditions of clay, where they are resisted, altered and given other capacities. The resulting ceramic does not reproduce the photograph; it becomes another spatial body through which the encounter persists and opens towards further relations.

An ecology of correspondence

The photograph persists. Its force~feelings migrate. Clay encounters, resists and transforms them. The ceramic withdraws into material persistence, but its becoming remains open.

Moreton's spatial practice is approached here not as a sequence of objects, nor as the illustration of a settled theoretical position, but as an ecology of apparatuses and persistent bodies through which the world becomes available for further touching.

Atmosphere provides the sensate ecology; allure draws bodies into relation; diffraction keeps their differences active; hospitality and alienation trouble the conditions of encounter; transmaterialreality names the changing material capacities that emerge through these relations; persistence sustains their possibilities beyond the initial event.

These movements remain interdependent and open to alteration. The reader is not asked to apply them as a fixed interpretive framework, but to enter the inquiry through whichever relations become consequential. A work may resist a proposition, an image may redirect a reading, a material encounter may disclose an unanticipated relation. Such moments extend the apparatus rather than invalidate it.

The writing wayfares between bodies of thought, image and matter. The withdrawn ceramics persist as material propositions. Their accord allows the practice to surface without being brought to a conclusion.

Transmaterialreality remains a working, indeterminate force~form through which these movements can be encountered, troubled and furthered.

The inquiry continues wherever another body becomes capable of touching the practice otherwise.
